S & W: I’m Not There

Well, as my compatriot LHartz said below, it was just plain CONFUSING! I was very disappointed in this film, which annoys me, because i was sooo looking forward to seeing it.

I have a feeling that, had i known a little about Bob Dylan, i might have understood what the heck was going on. In the past, i’ve never needed to do research before i went to see a film based on someone’s life, simply because the movie did the job of telling me who they were. I will give the director, Todd Haynes, credit for the actors he chose. In my opinion, any time Cate Blanchett is a part of the cast, the acting is going to be incredible. It was also nice to see Christian Bale and Heath Ledger in the mix as well; two more young men who have/had great potential.

Going into this film, i was under the impression that seven actors would be playing Bob Dylan at different stages in his life. Which is what the film does. Mr. Haynes just forgot to tell some of us that the stages of Dylan’s life weren’t going to be in chronological order. You’re watching a young boy in an open train car, then all of a sudden, you’re looking at a young twenty-something being interviewed. Also, you’d think that it would be blatantly obvious that these actors were ALL playing the same person. However, each and every one of them had a different name. Christian Bale was a movie star turned singer. Cate Blanchett was the singer without a ‘political voice’. It just didn’t make much sense to me.

In the end, i think it should probably get an Oscar nod for acting and cinematography. But in terms of story line, i give it two big thumbs down.
