(S&W) Sigur Ros: Heima

Beautiful. That film was absolutely beautiful. The portrayal of all the different, unique locations around Iceland was really beautiful and, when added to the music, really magical.
Before watching this movie (and the music video in class), I had never heard of Sigur Ros. As far as I know, I had never heard their music. I was absolutely enthralled when I heard the first song played in this film. The style of singing and the music just creates this kind of magic which just sweeps me along. I found the style rather reminiscent, though obviously different, to the music of the elves in the new Lord of the Rings films. In fact the entire movie I was trying to bring to mind a song that was flitting around the edges of my preconscious. The song was quite similar to Sigur Ros’s distinctive sound but it had several singers including girls and was in a movie about magic. I still do not recall what song I was remembering. But the whole effect just added more to the magic of the music. It was as though the singing was calling me back to a magical kingdom that I had been to before but now only half remember. Like a dream. I really loved the music. On top of that, I found the band’s use of dramatic lighting rather intriguing. For example the song from the first concert shows them behind a fabric screen with shifting lights so that their shadows dance and fade. Then in the final concert they enter seizure-inducing strobes of lights and abstract images as their music ramps up. On the whole I really enjoyed the film and the band.
It was magical.
